Former Governor of Ogun State has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist and media trailblaser, Dr. Doyin Abiola (née Aboaba), who died on Tuesday, August 5, at the age of 82.

In a condolence statement issued by his media office, Senator Amosun described the late Dr. Abiola as a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism whose life and career left an indelible mark on the media landscape.

“Dr. Doyin Abiola was a trailblazer and a consummate media professional who devoted her life to the advancement of journalism in Nigeria.

“At a time when it was a rare privilege, particularly for women to attain academic heights, she earned a doctorate degree in Communications and Politics, underscoring her brilliant mind,” Amosun said.

He highlighted her historic role as the first female Editor-in-Chief of a national daily in Nigeria, following her editorial contributions at Daily Times and her influential leadership at the Concord Newspaper.

Senator Amosun commended her legacy of impactful journalism, visionary leadership, and commitment to professional ethics.

Beyond her journalistic accomplishments, Amosun paid tribute to her courage and resilience during Nigeria’s political struggles, particularly her unwavering support for her late husband, Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“She will also be remembered for her steadfast support during the political trials faced by Chief MKO Abiola. In the face of adversity, she stood firm, demonstrating extraordinary courage and loyalty.”

Senator Amosun extended his condolences to the children, grandchildren, and extended family of the late media icon, praying that Almighty Allah (SWT) grant her Aljannah Firdaus and give the family the strength to bear the loss.
