The Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU) has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over the failure of the Lagos State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.

The strike takes effect from Tuesday, September 15, 2026, following an emergency congress meeting of the union.

The union said the decision followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government to address its demands, particularly the domestication and implementation of the 2025 ASUU/FGN agreement.

In a joint statement signed by the Coordinator of the ASUU-LASU Steering Committee, Dr Oluwaseun Babalola, and its Secretary, Thanny Nooem, the union expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the government’s poor handling of lecturers’ welfare.

The union identified poor staff salaries and unresolved retirement benefits for retired professors among its major grievances, saying it had made several attempts to engage the government constructively without achieving a concrete resolution.

ASUU-LASU said there was no alternative to industrial action following the prolonged delay, insisting that lecturers would only return to the classrooms after the disputed issues had been fully addressed and the 2025 agreement signed and implemented.

It declared that the strike would remain “absolute and indefinite” until its demands were completely met.

As of the time of filing the report, neither the Lagos State Government nor the management of LASU had issued an official reaction to the strike declaration.
