The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the former governor of the State and Senator representing Ogun East at the National Assembly, Otunba Gbenga Daniel from the party.
Also suspected indefinitely for alleged anti-party activity and gross misconduct, alongside Senator Daniel, is one Hon. Kunle Folarin.
The decision, according to a statement signed by the party’s Director of Publicity, Nuberu Olufemi, was made during a meeting of the State Working Committee held on Monday and chaired by the party’s State Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi.
Sixteen members of the committee, according to the statement, were in attendance at the meeting, which considered and adopted the recommendations of two separate ward-level disciplinary committees set up in Sagamu Local Government Area.
According to a statement, the disciplinary actions originated from petitions received by the party leadership at the ward level, prompting the establishment of investigative panels in Ward 4 and Ward 6 of Sagamu.
While a disciplinary committee was reportedly set up to investigate Senator Daniel at Ward 4 in Sagamu, Folarin was reportedly investigated by Ward 6.
Both committees reportedly invited the affected members to appear before them to defend themselves against the allegations.
The party further claimed that letters were sent to Senator Daniel and Folarin, informing them of the allegations and inviting them to disciplinary meetings where they would have had the opportunity to provide a written defense, appear in person, or seek a pardon.
It further claimed that neither of them responded to the invitations, nor did they attend the meetings or submit any form of written defense.
The statement further alleged that beyond failing to cooperate with the disciplinary process, both individuals actively sought to undermine it by allegedly harassing members to withdraw the petitions.
The committees reportedly received information that the two members had been harassing party members involved in the investigation and attempting to intimidate witnesses.
The party said both disciplinary committees concluded their investigations based on the available evidence and witness testimonies and found sufficient grounds to impose indefinite suspensions on both members, pending further inquiries.
Following deliberations at the August 19 meeting, the SWC voted to affirm the suspensions, the statement said.
The party further noted that its decision was guided by the need to uphold discipline, protect the integrity of its internal processes, and demonstrate that no member, regardless of political standing, is above party rules.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Senator Gbenga Daniel nor Hon. Kunle Folarin had issued any public statement in response to the suspensions or the allegations against them.
