Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has retired to prepare the sentencing decision for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who was earlier convicted on terrorism and six other charges.
During Thursday’s proceedings, the prosecution urged the court to impose the death penalty.
Before sentencing, Justice Omotosho invited Kanu’s consultant and former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, to deliver an allocutus, a formal plea made on behalf of a convicted person. Ejimakor, however, requested that a representative of Kanu’s constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives, be allowed to present the plea.
Hon. Aguocha, representing Ikwano, Umuahia North and South appealed for mercy and clemency, noting that the case has dragged on for nearly a decade and emphasizing that Kanu has been separated from his family for many years.
The court is expected to deliver its sentence before 4 p.m. today.
