Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have rearrested the national president of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Bodejo, shortly after he was released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bodejo was reportedly whisked away by DSS operatives on Friday shortly after he had perfected the conditions for his bail in an ongoing money-laundering trial.

His family, however, expressed shock over the rearrest, arguing that the action was contrary to the rule of law and demanding an explanation from the security agency.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on July 20 granted Bodejo bail in the sum of N2 billion in connection with his trial over alleged money laundering involving $2.63 million.

He was first arraigned by the EFCC on July 9 on multiple charges bordering on alleged money laundering, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Bodejo subsequently remained in detention while his lawyers worked to perfect the bail conditions, which they eventually completed earlier this week.

His wife, Hajiya Hauwa Bodejo, said the family went to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Friday following communication from the commission that arrangements had been made for his release.

She alleged that DSS operatives had remained around the EFCC premises for hours before Bodejo was released.

According to her, the family was shocked when the operatives moved towards her husband immediately after he left the EFCC premises and whisked him away in three vans.

Hauwa said the family had been seeking justice for her husband and expressed concern over what she described as the continued deterioration of his health.

She further alleged that Bodejo’s personal physician had repeatedly been denied access to him since his arrest, which she said had lasted nearly three months.

“The EFCC had communicated to his lawyers on Thursday night, demanding them to come forward along with the court officials for his release, scheduled on Friday,” she said.

She added that after arriving at the EFCC headquarters, the family discovered that Bodejo had already been brought out of detention and that officials were waiting for their presence before completing his release.

“While we were leaving the EFCC premises, the officials of the DSS, whose presence we noticed around the EFCC’s gate, rushed towards my husband and suddenly whisked him away, in the company of three vans,” she said.

The DSS had yet to officially comment on the reason for Bodejo’s rearrest as of the time of filing the report, with enquiries sent to the agency’s official email reportedly unanswered.
