Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90.

Family sources confirmed his death on Saturday, although details surrounding the circumstances of his death were not immediately disclosed.

Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur was a politician, businessman and public administrator whose career spanned several decades.

He served as governor of the defunct Gongola State, which comprised present-day Adamawa and Taraba states, after winning the gubernatorial election in 1983.

His tenure, however, was cut short following the military coup in December of that year.

Before venturing into politics, Tukur had a distinguished career at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), where he served as General Manager between 1975 and 1982.

He later returned to federal public service as Minister of Industries from 1993 to 1995 under the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha.

Beyond government, Tukur established BHI Holdings, popularly known as the DADDO Group of Companies, and played prominent roles in African economic and business development.

He served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and chaired the NEPAD Business Group, while also undertaking advisory roles with international trade organisations.

Tukur returned to partisan politics at the national level and was elected National Chairman of the PDP in March 2012, with the backing of then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

He resigned from the position in January 2014 following prolonged internal disagreements and factional disputes within the party.

A holder of the traditional title of Tafidan Adamawa, Tukur was also honoured by the Nigerian government with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

The Republic of Togo similarly conferred on him the Commander of the Order of the Mono (COM).

He is survived by his wives, children and grandchildren.
