A TikTok content creator, Wasilat Olalere, has alleged that she was compelled to falsely claim she became mysteriously ill after allegedly recording the revered Oloolu masquerade in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Olalere made the allegation during an interview with an Islamic cleric in Ibadan in a video that surfaced online on Wednesday.

She maintained that contrary to claims made in an earlier viral video, she neither saw the Oloolu masquerade nor suffered any strange illness.

According to her, the only footage she recorded was of operatives of the Amotekun Corps and residents gathered in anticipation of the annual outing of the Oloolu masquerade.

"I recorded Amotekun vehicles that were parked and people who were in front of our house waiting for Oloolu masquerade.

"I only captioned the video that Oloolu was around Atolu and advised people to be careful so they would not come in contact with him," she said.

She explained that shortly after posting the clip on TikTok, several people contacted her, urging her to delete it. She said she complied immediately but discovered that copies of the video had already been saved and circulated by others.

Olalere further alleged that members of the Oloolu traditional institution, popularly known as Sokoti, later stormed her shop, threatened her and took her away despite appeals from residents.

According to her, the men claimed they were acting on the instruction of the Olubadan and warned that she could be imprisoned.

She alleged that she was first detained at the Agungun Police Station before being granted bail on Saturday.

"However, she said immediately after regaining her freedom, she was taken to Ode Aje, where she was compelled to undergo traditional cleansing rites.

Olalere claimed that her family was instructed to provide ritual items, including a goat, a piece of red cloth and a razor blade.

She alleged that during the ceremony, the goat was placed on her neck before it was slaughtered over her head, after which she was instructed to allow the blood to dry on her body.

According to her, those present also recorded a video and directed her to state that she had fallen seriously ill after seeing the Oloolu masquerade and had voluntarily come for spiritual cleansing.

"They told me to say that since I saw Oloolu, I had been unwell and bleeding all over my body. They also forced me to say that I came for cleansing by myself.

"Nothing happened to me. I did not bleed at all, not even my menstrual period," she alleged.

Olalere further claimed that after the ceremony, her husband was allegedly made to pay N400,000 in addition to the money spent on procuring the ritual materials.

The latest allegations contradict an earlier account presented by the Family Secretary of the Oloolu masquerade, Oluwo Ishola Akeem.

Akeem had maintained that Olalere was neither assaulted nor coerced, insisting that she voluntarily admitted violating the age-long tradition forbidding the recording of the Oloolu masquerade and willingly underwent the cleansing rites after consultations with her family.

He also dismissed rumours that she died following the ritual and denied allegations of physical abuse, stating that the traditional rites were performed in accordance with established customs.

However, Olalere's latest testimony disputes that position, alleging that the cleansing exercise, the recorded confession and the payment of N400,000 were all carried out under duress.
