Just In: Nine killed in fatal crash along Ijebu-Ode–Ore road
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has confirmed that nine people were killed in a road traffic crash along the JBD–Ore route in Ijebu-Ode.
In a press statement signed by the Sector Public Education Officer, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, the command said the crash occurred at about 4:55pm at the Bethel area within the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command.
According to the FRSC, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line, and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle with registration number AAB162XD, belonging to Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
The command said nine persons, comprising three males and six females, were involved in the crash, adding that all nine victims died.
The FRSC said the crash occurred during rainfall, when the road pavement was wet. It added that preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash.
The command said its rescue team arrived at the scene at about 4:58pm, two minutes after receiving the report. According to the FRSC, the bodies of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, according to the statement, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution while driving during rainfall.
Ogunjobi also advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid driving practices that could endanger lives.
He noted that speeding on wet roads could be particularly dangerous because reduced tyre grip and visibility may make it more difficult for motorists to control their vehicles or stop safely.
The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged all road users to make safety their priority at all times.
