Just In: Top ISWAP Leaders, 76 Fighters Surrender to Troops in North-East – Military
The Nigerian military has announced the surrender of top leaders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and 76 foot soldiers, alongside members of their families, to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East.
The Acting Military Information Officer of the Headquarters, Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Muhammad Goni, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday night.
According to Goni, the insurgents abandoned their enclaves and laid down their arms following sustained military offensives and mounting operational pressure by troops.
"The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, has continued to record significant operational successes in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists through sustained operations backed by credible, timely and actionable intelligence," the statement said.
He revealed that the latest group of those who surrendered included senior ISWAP leaders and other key members of the terrorist network, who reportedly gave themselves up due to the relentless military campaign.
According to him, the surrendered insurgents are currently being held at a secure location where they are undergoing profiling, debriefing and other established procedures in line with operational protocols.
Goni added that within the last week alone, a total of 76 terrorist foot soldiers, accompanied by some of their family members, had surrendered to troops operating in the North-East theatre.
He described the development as another indication of the effectiveness of the sustained offensive by Operation Hadin Kai, noting that the operations had continued to dismantle terrorist enclaves, disrupt command and logistics structures and deny insurgents freedom of movement.
The military spokesman said the continuous operations had significantly degraded the terrorists' combat capabilities while weakening confidence within their ranks and leadership.
He attributed the successes to the military's comprehensive counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency strategy, which combines precision combat operations, intelligence-led missions and coordinated joint efforts with security partners.
Goni reaffirmed that Operation Hadin Kai remains committed to its mandate of defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-East.
He added that military pressure on the remaining terrorist elements would continue until they are completely neutralised or compelled to surrender.
