Lafarge Africa Plc has unveiled EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, marking a major milestone in the country’s construction industry.
The innovative product, launched at the company’s Abuja Ready-Mix plant, now fully converted to 100% EcoCrete production, delivers at least 20% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional CEM I concrete, while maintaining the same high performance and durability.
Group Managing Director/CEO of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, described the launch as part of the company’s commitment to decarbonising Nigeria’s construction sector.
“The introduction of EcoCrete is another bold step in our mission to enable builders and our customers make smart choices and support Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy. Just like our ECOPlanet cement, EcoCrete represents a game-changing innovation that combines performance with reduced carbon footprint,” he said.
Highlighting the product’s benefits, Head of Aggregates and Ready-Mix, Derek Williamson, explained that EcoCrete offers superior performance across housing, commercial, and infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges.
“With EcoCrete, builders and developers can now make environmentally conscious choices without compromising on strength, durability, or workability,” he noted.
Also speaking, Lafarge Africa’s Head of Innovation and New Product Development, Emmanuel Ilaboya, emphasised the role of EcoCrete in addressing climate change.
“EcoCrete is more than just a product; it is a climate-smart innovation designed to address the urgent need for sustainable construction. It represents a scalable alternative that significantly lowers CO₂ emissions and supports Nigeria’s path towards sustainable development,” he said.
The launch of EcoCrete builds on the success of EcoPlanet Unicem and EcoPlanet Elephant cement products introduced in 2024 and 2025 respectively, further expanding Lafarge Africa’s portfolio of sustainable building solutions.
With this addition, Lafarge Africa strengthens its leadership in low-carbon innovations, in line with Holcim’s global vision of “building progress for people and the planet.”
