The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has called on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to ensure full compliance with constitutional provisions protecting the right of Muslim female corps members to wear the hijab, following a reported case of discrimination in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MPAC expressed concern over an incident where a female corps member was allegedly denied clearance by an NYSC Local Government Inspector for wearing a knee-length hijab, a development the organisation described as “unlawful and unacceptable.”
The group noted that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religious expression, and urged the NYSC to align its internal policies with these protections.
“It is disturbing that an official representing a national institution like the NYSC would flagrantly violate these rights under the guise of uniform regulation or personal discretion,” the statement read.
MPAC commended the Muslim Corpers’ Association of Nigeria (MCAN) for its swift intervention, which reportedly led to a resolution of the issue and restoration of the corps member’s rights.
However, the group insisted that such incidents are not isolated.
“Across the country, Muslim female corps members continue to face subtle and overt discrimination due to their choice to wear the hijab, an essential and non-negotiable aspect of their religious identity,” said MPAC Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor.
The organisation urged the NYSC Director-General to issue a nationwide directive to all state coordinators and local officials, particularly in the 774 local government areas, reaffirming the right of Muslim corps members to wear the hijab.
MPAC also warned against any NYSC personnel imposing unofficial dress codes that contradict constitutional provisions or established court rulings.
“The hijab is not a symbol of rebellion or resistance, it is an expression of faith. Denying female Muslims their right to it is an affront to Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement added.
MPAC reiterated its commitment to monitoring similar cases and pursuing legal action where necessary, in defense of what it termed “non-negotiable constitutional rights.”
