A member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Owode Waliu Ifedolapo, has expressed grief over the death of Mr. Musa Yahaya Kalamu, a 49-year-old resident who was tragically killed by a wild elephant in the Itasin area of Ijebu East Local Government.
Describing the incident as "deeply unfortunate and shocking," Hon. Ifedolapo extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for strength and peace during their time of mourning.
In a statement issued on Monday, the lawmaker called for calm among residents, acknowledging the fear and tension sparked by the rare but deadly wildlife encounter.
“While we understand the pain and confusion this incident has caused, we urge our people to remain calm. The government is being engaged to take swift and lasting action,” he said.
Hon. Ifedolapo urged the Ogun State Government and relevant environmental and wildlife agencies to immediately investigate the cause of the incident and implement preventive measures to forestall a recurrence.
He emphasized the need for a conservationist development strategy in the region to help regulate human-wildlife boundaries and ensure the safety of lives and property, without compromising environmental sustainability.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between conservation agencies, local authorities, and the state government. Our communities should not live in fear of wildlife attacks. We must strike a balance between conservation and safety,” he added.
He also promised to raise the matter on the floor of the Ogun State House of Assembly as part of efforts to ensure long-term solutions are developed and implemented.
Kala was killed on Monday by the wild elephant, the development which has triggered outrage in the community where human-animal conflicts have been recorded many times.
