Police arrest controversial comparator, Jamiu Adegunwa, over alleged defamatory publication
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a controversial comparator, Jamiu Adegunwa, over alleged defamatory publications targeting the President of the Academy of Islamic Propagation (ACADIP), Mallam Yusuf Adepoju.
Adegunwa was apprehended in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday following his failure to appear before the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, in connection with an ongoing criminal case.
Court documents sighted by HorizonTimes show that the comparator is standing trial before the Federal High Court, Osogbo Judicial Division, in Charge No. FHC/OS/86C/2025.
According to the one-count charge filed by the prosecution on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Adegunwa is accused of knowingly and intentionally transmitting verbal and photographic messages through the internet and social media on his platform, Al Madrasatu Wahabiyah, which were alleged to be false, offensive and menacing in nature.
The prosecution alleged that the publications were directed at Mallam Yusuf Adepoju and members of his family, and were capable of causing inconvenience, danger, insult, injury, hatred, enmity, ill-will and needless anxiety.
The charge further stated that the alleged offence was committed between July 4 and July 31, 2022, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
According to the charge sheet signed by the Head of Legal and Prosecution, Nigeria Police Force, Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, Dr. J.O. Famuyini, the alleged conduct contravenes Section 24(1)(a) and (b) as well as Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The prosecution also alleged that Adegunwa had previously instituted a civil action against the Inspector-General of Police and the then Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, seeking N500 million in damages.
The Police maintained that the matter was decided in its favour and that subsequent court processes led to efforts to secure the defendant's appearance before the court.
