The Presidency has dismissed claims by Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew that he was appointed Director-General of a Presidential Economic Advisory Council, describing the purported agency as fictitious and accusing him of impersonation and forgery.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Office of the Chief of Staff had, as far back as October 2025, alerted security agencies to the activities of individuals allegedly forging presidential appointment letters and operating non-existent government agencies.

According to the statement, the Chief of Staff petitioned the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging that Adeyemi had been presenting himself as Director-General of a so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, also referred to as the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, using forged documents purportedly issued by the Presidency.

The Presidency said investigations by the Nigeria Police established that the agency did not exist and that the appointment letter and other official documents in Adeyemi's possession were forged.

It further alleged that Adeyemi falsely represented himself as a government appointee, sought diplomatic support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate United States visas for members of the organisation and operated multiple bank accounts linked to fictitious agencies.

According to the statement, the police subsequently filed an eight-count charge against Adeyemi and two other suspects at the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 27, 2025, over allegations bordering on forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence.

The case, it was said, is scheduled for hearing on July 27, 2026.

The government however kept mum on the allegee N1.3b budget for the same fictitious agency.

In a document circulating on social media claimed to be a copy of the budget, Presidential Economic Advisory Council/Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council was sighted with serial number 18 with about N1.3b budget.

The Presidency also said Adeyemi's recent claim that the Chief of Staff appointed him contradicted the statement he earlier made to investigators, prompting the Presidency to issue another disclaimer on June 8, 2026.

The statement further alleged that Adeyemi had previously made false claims in 2016 about leading an organisation purportedly affiliated with the United Nations, adding that the UN had denied the existence of the body.

The Presidency urged politicians and members of the public not to rely on Adeyemi's claims and advised them to allow the ongoing court proceedings to run their course, noting that the matter is sub judice.
