Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp in Copenhagen ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League encounter with Denmark, following a tense spell involving head coach Jorge Jesus.

41-year-old Portugal captain confirmed his departure on Wednesday after a meeting with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

Ronaldo said he would explain the reasons for his decision to Portuguese supporters “in due course.”

The development followed reports of tension between Ronaldo and Jesus after the forward was left on the bench throughout Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday.

Ronaldo had reportedly been told he could feature as a substitute but was ultimately not introduced into the game.

Jesus, however, denied that there had been a serious disagreement with the veteran forward.

He said Ronaldo was disappointed after warming up without being brought on but insisted that there had been no incident between them.

The coach also said Ronaldo had not refused to train, explaining that the player had undertaken individual gym exercises earlier in the week.

Jesus subsequently indicated that AC Milan striker Gonçalo Ramos would start against Denmark, while Ronaldo's possible involvement would depend on the circumstances of the match.

Ronaldo's departure was later confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation, which said preparations for the Denmark and Norway fixtures would continue with the remaining 24 players in the squad.

Ronaldo, who has 234 international appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, started in the team's 1-0 victory over Wales before being left unused against Norway.

Portugal currently lead Nations League Group A4 with six points from two matches.
