As the countdown begins for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election slated for August 16, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Dr. Islamiyat Oluwatoyin Abdulkadir, has declared her readiness to clinch victory at the polls.

Dr. Abdulkadir, 32, a medical doctor and renowned cancer researcher, emerged as the SDP flagbearer following a consultative process within the party.

Her candidacy has drawn significant attention, with many hailing her as a refreshing blend of youth, intellect, and grassroots experience.

Speaking to reporters after her official declaration, Dr. Abdulkadir expressed confidence in her chances, citing the party's growing support base and her own track record of public service.

“We are not just contesting to participate, we are here to win and serve,” she asserted, pledging a people-centered, inclusive approach to lawmaking.

A First-Class medical graduate with a postgraduate degree in Cancer Research and Precision Oncology, Dr. Abdulkadir is not a newcomer to community engagement.

She previously spearheaded medical outreaches across rural areas in Oyo State and led Nigeria’s first-ever Medico-political Symposium, bridging healthcare and governance.

Her five-point legislative agenda shared with the media includes expanding access to quality healthcare, empowering women and young people, improving education and digital literacy, enhancing security and infrastructure, and promoting accountable, transparent representation.

Dr. Abdulkadir also emphasized her commitment to active engagement with constituents.

“A new era has come,” she said. “Ibadan North deserves a representative who listens, serves, and delivers real solutions.”

The bye-election was necessitated by the passing of the former representative, Hon. Musiliu Akinremi.

Political observers note that the seat is fiercely contested, but Dr. Abdulkadir’s professional background and message of hope may resonate with a populace eager for change.
