A courtroom exchange captured in a viral video has generated widespread reactions on social media after a suspect, while pleading for mercy before a judge, blamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his alleged actions.

In the video, the suspect, standing in the dock, appealed for leniency in Igbo, telling the court that he regretted his actions and would not offend again.

The identity of the suspect, the nature of the charges, and the location of the court proceedings were not disclosed in the video.

"Please forgive me. I will not do it again. I actually have something doing; I have handwork. But it was Tinubu who caused it," the suspect said, prompting laughter from some people present in the courtroom.

The clip has since gone viral across social media platforms, attracting a mix of reactions from Nigerians, with many debating whether economic hardship can contribute to rising crime.

Reacting on Facebook, Ganiyat Mojisola Bankole wrote that while poor governance and economic difficulties could contribute to criminality, individuals must still take responsibility for their choices.

"Somehow he's not entirely wrong. A bad government can precipitate crime. Nonetheless, crime is choice, he had options and he chose his path. So let him do his time," she wrote.

Another user, Emmanuel John, commented: "Tinubu will never forget this generation."

Makike Stella Offor said the suspect had merely expressed the reality of the country's economic situation, writing: "He stated the fact the economy is not favourable."

Kereyak Okpo also weighed in, suggesting that if the Federal Government could extend amnesty to repentant bandits, the suspect might also deserve an opportunity for forgiveness after promising to abandon crime.
