President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, as part of efforts to expand police training capacity nationwide.
This was contained in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the President also approved a special take-off grant of N15 billion to support the immediate development of the new campus.
The approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which mandates the expansion of the academy, currently headquartered in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
Funding for the project will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund), and will cover critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training equipment, the statement said.
The decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
The statement further said participants at the meeting evaluated factors such as student intake capacity, available funding, academic quality assurance, and the evolving manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently expanding its recruitment drive.
President Tinubu noted that the establishment of additional campuses would enhance institutional governance, improve the quality of modern policing education, and strengthen national security architecture.
The new Ogun campus is expected to complement existing facilities and significantly boost the training capacity of the academy as Nigeria seeks to modernize its policing system.
