The Ogun State Woman Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Abigail Wuraola Adeshina, has called for greater unity, collaboration and grassroots mobilisation among women leaders across the state as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
Adeshina made the call during a meeting with Local Government Area (LGA) women leaders from the 20 LGAs of Ogun State held in Omu-Ijebu on Sunday.
The meeting focused on strengthening the party's women's wing and enhancing coordination between women leaders and party structures at the local level.
In her remarks, the state woman leader commended the Ogun State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Femi Alao, for what she described as his visionary leadership and commitment to providing direction for the party.
She noted that under his stewardship, the party had continued to consolidate its position as a formidable opposition platform in the state.
She urged women leaders to work closely with their respective LGA chairmen and intensify engagement with ward-level women leaders to strengthen the party's grassroots network.
According to her, plans are underway to convene a broader stakeholders' meeting involving senatorial women leaders, all 20 LGA women leaders and the party's 236 ward women leaders across the state.
Adeshina said the proposed gathering would help build a robust grassroots structure capable of driving mobilisation efforts while ensuring that women remain actively involved in decision-making processes within the party.
The woman leader also condemned alleged attempts by some individuals to discourage or intimidate women leaders from participating in party activities.
She described such actions as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of democracy and freedom of association.
"No one has the right to intimidate or discourage any woman leader from participating in the democratic processes of our great party. The NDC stands for inclusion, and we will not tolerate attempts to silence the voices of our women," she said.
She further expressed concern that many of the party's candidates, despite their recent public presentation by the state chairman, had yet to engage with women leaders in their respective local government areas.
According to her, women leaders remain critical to grassroots mobilisation and electoral success and should be regarded as key partners in the party's political activities rather than mere supporters.
Adeshina also reaffirmed her commitment to open and inclusive leadership, stating that she remained accessible to all members of the party.
She also acknowledged and expressed deep respect for senior party leaders who she said she holds in high regards, nothing thatthey are people of reputation whom she believes can call her to order when things go wrong.
She identified them to include Hon. Itunu Abioro from Ipokia, Alhaja Kola, Alhaji Maruf Olajide and Barrister Bimbo Lanrea Balogun.
In their response, the LGA women leaders expressed appreciation for the state woman leader's vision and pledged their support for her leadership.
They also assured her of their readiness to work harmoniously with their respective LGA chairmen and other party stakeholders to strengthen the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting ended with renewed commitments from participants to deepen grassroots engagement and expand the party's support base across Ogun State.
