Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has raised concerns over her safety following the disruption of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign gathering in Abeokuta, Ogun State, saying the incident could have implications for the integrity of the January 2027 elections.

Obasanjo, the PDP candidate for Ogun Central Senatorial District, made the remarks during an interview with Splash FM after the incident at Ward 16, Trailer Park, in the Soyooye area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area.

She said she had seen videos showing masked men armed with cutlasses dismantling campaign canopies and attacking people shortly before her arrival.

According to reports, more than 10 men allegedly invaded the venue shortly before the arrival of PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and Obasanjo.

Campaign furniture and materials were reportedly damaged, while some people were said to have sustained injuries.

Obasanjo and Adebutu later arrived at the venue and contacted the Ogun State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS), after which security operatives were deployed to the area.

Obasanjo said she was putting the United Nations, the United States Embassy in Nigeria and the international community on notice over what she described as renewed threats to her life.

She also recalled an incident during the 2003 elections when, according to her, gunmen attacked a vehicle in her convoy after allegedly believing she was travelling in it.

“This is not the first time they are making attempts at my life,” she alleged, warning that the world should know who was responsible if anything happened to her.

The former senator also questioned what she described as continued interest by some of her former political associates in her decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) and join the PDP.

However, the identity and political affiliation of those behind Monday’s disruption had not been independently established at the time of reporting.

Initial allegations that some supporters were attacked and robbed of their valuables also remained subject to verification. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Seyi Babaseyi, reportedly could not immediately confirm the circumstances of the incident and requested that inquiries be sent by text message.

Obasanjo subsequently called for greater attention to the safety of political actors and supporters, warning that continued violence could undermine confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.

Her allegations concerning the identity and motives of those behind the incident remain claims requiring investigation and independent verification.
